The cold and horrifying truth behind...puppy mills.
Let's say that you want to get a new family member...a puppy. You go to the pet store and see a "doggie in the window" that you just completely fall in love with. You ask the owners of the store about the history of this adorable puppy. The owners tell you that this puppy comes from "responsible and small" dog breeders. You trust the people that tell you this, and don't do research before you buy the puppy. When you bring the puppy home, it starts acting odd and you realize that your new puppy is sick. Now you have a huge problem on your hands. The first question to ask yourself is: Why is my new dog sick- didn't she come from "small and responsible" breeders? This is a big fat lie. The "doggie in the window" comes from a puppymill. In fact, 99% of those cute "doggies in the windows" that you see at your local pet store come from puppymills. We need to raise awareness and need to shut these puppymills down. But, the question is, how do we do this? Here are some first steps: We should never buy puppies from pet stores. We always adopt from shelters. We should never ever buy a puppy from an online store that says they are "puppymill free," because this is never the case. Adopt, never shop. Buying a puppy from a pet store or online is shopping, not adopting. Your heart may be broken when you turn away from that puppy that you feel so "connected" to, and you may feel like you are saving it by buying the puppy, but what you don't realize is that if you and other people don't buy puppies from pet stores, than these pet stores and puppymills won't get paid, and these massive puppymill farms will go out of business. You see an adorable puppy sitting in the window... but you don't know what's behind this puppy. This puppy may go to a good home, but have you ever thought about all these other dogs, and especially the parents of the puppy? Well, right now, they are living on chicken wire, never getting food or water, and getting bred litter after litter until they can no longer reproduce anymore...and when this happens?...They get shot or dumped in a plastic bag (alive) in the woods somewhere. When they can no longer breed, they are deemed as "useless." NO dog is useless, though. EVERY single dog has a spirit...a soul. But people don't realize this, especially those cold hearted puppymill farmers who don't care what kinds of conditions their dogs live in; they just want to bring in money....Money, money, money is all they think about. Don't know what a puppymill is? One single puppymill consists on hundreds of dogs, and the massive ones house thousands. These dogs are stacked up to the ceiling in chicken wire cages. They can't lie down because their cages are so small, nor can they even move. They hardly ever fed, and these farmers don't ever give them clean water (you don't want to even guess what's in that water). As I said, these dogs get bred over and over again, starting when they are a puppy, ending when they are too old enough to breed – then they get killed, around five-six years old or whenever they can't be bred anymore. Another appalling fact is that some of these dogs are used for soccer practice by some of the puppymill farmer's kids. This is NOT the way to live. Eventually, these dogs give up. Some of them get saved, and most of them don't. We need to make a change and show everyone that this is NOT acceptable. The dogs are counting on anyone who will help them – until they give up, as I said. These dogs are loaded with diseases – cancer, ripped off legs by the farmers, torn out eyes, kidney stones, massive cuts on wire from trying to escape their cage, and any other dog disease possible. Don't even think about their teeth. And when some of these dogs have trouble giving birth? The farmers rip open their stomachs with farm tools to get the puppies and leave the mother to die on the cold, hard wire. These dogs are either left in their cages in the freezing cold to turn into blocks of ice, or they are left in their cages in the burning heat to suffocate or literally melt on the hot bars of their cage. Either people don't see the cold, hard truth, or they don't want anything to do with it. One person can make a difference. These dogs have given us so much over these thousands of years, and they're known as "man's best friend". What the heck have these dogs done to deserve this? Living in their feces their entire lives in tiny cages, and getting shot when they're too old to breed? It's abuse and cruelty. Eighty dogs got shot in 2008 by a puppymill farmer, dogs young and old for no reason at all. This needs to come to and end. And how can this even be legal? The big question that we should ask ourselves is: how can animal abuse be illegal and puppymills are not? Two huge companies are behind all of this: Petland, and the AKC. 100% of the puppies that are placed in Petland come from puppymills. Yet, they all lie about it and say that they're not! But people have traced back and have found that the parents of these puppies at Petland are in a puppymill now, living a life of misery. And the AKC? They're all fake, fake, fake. All they do is "register" a dog with a paper. They support puppymills, though they say they don't. They're huge liars. They register puppy mill dogs, and though they always see the conditions that these dogs are in, it doesn't faze them onebit. http://www.chicagonow.com/raining-cats-dogs/2014/03/why-the-akc-fights-for-puppy-mills/ These dogs DON'T deserve this. I think it's more necessary for the people who do this to the dogs to experience the hell hole that these dogs are living though – how about we shove them in tiny chicken wired crates for their entire life and don't feed them? God put every single creature on this planet for a reason. He didn’t put thousands of dogs on this planet so they could live a life like Hell. There are 10,000 puppymills in the USA now, and over 250 of them are in Iowa. We need to realize the cold, hard, and horrifying truth and have others realize it as well. Again, one person can make a difference. But the more and more people that have the warning to not buy from pet stores can also make a difference. I hope that I have written enough information that I have learned over the past couple years for you all to understand what puppymills really are, and the abuse behind them. There are also plenty of videos of real puppymills on YouTube that you can watch if you feel up for it. I highly recommend watching the documentary on puppymills called "Dog by Dog." Thank you so much. Wecanmake a difference. These innocent dogs can't lose hope, and we need to stand by them and fight for their rights.
